About the Author

Sam Killian is originally from British Columbia, Canada. Born in the rural mountains near the border of Alberta, she migrated to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, then made her way to the states and currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona. She ultimately took a path into medicine and attended The University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson and then completed her residency at the county hospital in Phoenix, Maricopa County Medical Center. Now working in a community hospital in the East Valley of Metro Phoenix, the stress of death, disease and the ever present social issues smothering her patients spurred her on to release those pent up emotions in a regular journaling of her experiences, the catharsis of writing allowing her to decompress from the failures and heartbreak inherent in working in the Emergency Department.

Married, raising two children and working full time, Killian was able to put together her first manuscript, tediously over 6 years. Finally, overcoming the hurdle of insecurity as a writer, she forged her way to getting published. Now with her first debut novel, cultivated and polished with loving care, comes the beginnings of a series based on the life of an adventurous ER doctor slash beach bum, who has a talent for getting into amateur misadventures. Her heroine waxes poetic on the struggles of healthcare alongside her harrowing travels across the globe, searching for redemption as a gallant she-knight but also in search of her own humanity along the way.

Killian’s passion for this genre of writing stems from her obsession with deceased author, John D. MacDonald, master storyteller and famed creator of the Travis McGee Series, all of which Killian has poured over multiple times, rereading stories she knows as well as her stethoscope. Her writing, she admits, is an homage to the late author, and an attempt to recreate the textures and style of his writing, if only to help him live on through her work, an author’s most enduring compliment.

She is currently working on her second novel in the Nora Dexter Series, her shifts in the ER a continual well she can dip into, enlightening us on the travails of healthcare in the constant evolution of that staid institution. Look for her new novel as it hits the marketplace.
